ILORIN- A 19-year-old Chemistry Student of the University of Ilorin, Mr.Ajayi Joshua Oluwatobi was on Tuesday sentenced to Nine months imprisonment by an Ilorin High court for allegedly defrauding three students seeking hostel accommodation.

Justice Sikiru Oyinloye who delivered the ruling also ordered Oluwatobi to pay the sum one hundred and five (105) thousand naira fine to serve as a deterrent to others

The Ilorin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC) filed the court case against the affected student.

The convict ran into a problem when authorities of University of Ilorin reported his conducts to the EFCC that he defrauded three accommodation seekers.

The charge sheet presented against the student at the court by the EFCC reads: “That you, Ajayi Joshua Oluwatobiloba, in November 2019, in Ilorin, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, did cheat by deceiving one Anjorin Oluwabukolami Eniola, a University of Ilorin student when you fraudulently induced her to pay N45,000 into the bank account of one Hassan Adefemi Daniel for hostel accommodation;

“A representation you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 320 of the Penal Code and punishable under section 322 of the same Law”.

The prosecution Counsel Mr. Andrew Akija told the court that ” the defendant was brought before this honourable Court on a three-count charge, the charges were read to him and he pleaded guilty, this Court accepts the evidence of the prosecution, the one-way testimonies of the Sole Prosecution witness, the unchallenged and uncontradicted testimonies”

Counsel to the defendant in his allocution, J.A.O Ayinde urged the Presiding Judge to temper justice with mercy and give his client an option of fine rather than a custodial sentence.

Responding, Prosecution Counsel, Andrew Akoja said “My Lord, the issue of sentencing is within the discretion of the Court, I want the Court to use its discretion in sentencing the convict ”

After hearing the parties, Justice Oyinloye sentenced Oluwatobi to three months imprisonment on count 1, 2, and 3.

Recall that schools have been closed nationwide since March so as to avoid the spread of the virus and unnecessary exposure of students to the Coronavirus virus.

Many advice has been given to the Federal Government with regards to schools resumption, including the recent advice of ASUU, which was against school resumption.

However, the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on Covid-19 Chairman, Boss Mustapha, has finally announced today, Monday, June 29 that President Muhammad Buhari has consented to the approval of the committee's recommendations that students of graduating classes I.e Primary 6, JSS 3, and SSS 3 Cam resume in a bid to hasten their preparation for their final examinations.

Other classes, apart from this three (3) are to remain closed, pending the time Implementation of the Federal plans in schools, while tertiary institutions were encouraged to continue with the e-learning programme.

President Buhari has also lifted the ban on interstate movement that has been in place nationwide since the beginning of May.

The President also lifted the ever present ban on the interstate travel (So as to allow students and teachers to be able to travel to their various institutions).

The ban which has been imposed since early May, and has finally been lifted by the Federal Government. The interstate drivers have thereby been directed to only fill half of the capacity of their transport vehicles during travels.

Thus, The Federal Government finally Okays the resumption of schools in Nigeria.

WEEKEND’s reopening of churches and mosques in some states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has become a source of worry to the Federal Government due to the breach of guidelines.
The Federal Government last week released protocols that should form the basis of discussions between the state governments and religious leaders before the reopening of worship centres.

Although Nigeria’s COVID-19 cases continue to rise, the government decided to unlock the country to save the economy from collapse.
There are fears over what will likely happen when worship centres are reopened in Lagos and Ogun states next week.

A Presidential Task Force (PTF) source said the panel was shocked at the way protocols were shunned in Abuja, Osun and Kwara states, where religious centres were reopened at the weekend.
As opposed to the rule barring children from worship centres, many kids were allowed into churches.
In many of the centres, there was no observance of social distancing.
Many churches also extended their services beyond the one hour limit.
Many worshippers also did not use face masks while big churches retained their large members as against the advisory to operate at 60 per cent capacity.
However, many churches provided water for hand washing which many worshippers used.
Many other used temperature measurement before allowing people into their auditorium.
Worshippers were also seen filing the at attendance register provided at churches.
On Monday, Chairman of the PTF Mr. Boss Mustapha, reiterated that Nigerians remained at great risk of Coronavirus infection.
He said at the daily briefing of the agency: “We urge our religious leaders and the entire populace to adhere to the guidelines issued by the PTF and the protocols agreed by the State Governments. The PTF continues to monitor compliance nationwide.
“If everyone diligently observes the guidelines, we can collectively control the spread of the virus, and help to protect our health facilities as well as save lives”.
He added: “over the last weekend, the ease of restriction on places of worship came into focus and that it is important to note that the guidelines gave states the latitude and the opportunity to negotiate protocols that meet their peculiarities.”
He also noted that the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic had exposed the weaknesses inherent in the nation’s health care systems and the need for urgent attention.
“Within our national setting, the weaknesses inherent in our national health care systems were made glaring and needed urgent attention. Government determined immediately, to take on the lessons and to ensure that the healthcare system experienced tremendous leap in human and infrastructure development as well as policy focus, stability and direction,” he said.
The SGF said the PTF had commenced the process of introducing mental health services to the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that enough priority attention had all along been devoted to the management of the health of victims and their families.
“I am pleased to inform you that PTF has commenced the process of integrating comprehensive psychological services programme into its activities. This will be for the benefit of people who are in isolation, wellbeing of their families and communities.
“In this regard, we wish to recognize the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, FCT, for spearheading this drive, which shall inevitably assume a national dimension because of the importance of mental health”, he said.

Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, says he does not believe that President Muhammadu Buhari is in charge of Nigeria.

Soyinka made the comment on Thursday, June 4 in an interview with Plus TV Africa. His comment was in reaction to an open letter written to President Buhari by Colonel Umar Dangiwa (rtd), a former military administrator of Kaduna state.

Dangiwa had accused the president of nepotism, especially as regards to his appointments.

Professor Soyinka is insistent that President Buhari is not in charge of the country.

Asked what his thoughts were on the open letter, Soyinka said: “Well, my first reaction was thank goodness people like Umar who has a tendency to hit the nail hard and go to the point factually without self-interest.

“It struck me when I saw this and I was appalled. But I said to myself why should I be surprised that such an atrocity has been going on.

“I think those who are responsible for this criminal lopsidedness should be punished. It is not sufficient just to discuss it. It’s criminal.

“I have said this before. I don’t believe there is really anybody in charge in Aso Rock. I’m sorry to say this. I’ve been studying the trend over the past year and a half and I believe this president is not in charge of this nation, in so many aspects and directions. I’m convinced he’s not really and totally with it.

“It’s so serious. It is not the fact alone, we know the history of this. We know what it has caused the nation and we know it isn’t over yet. And you say are launching an enquiry. That’s not enough. This man is not in charge.”

Soyinka also decried the silence of the presidency on the issue raised by Dangiwa, adding that it creates a sense of impunity.
