One of the Football accolades that have eluded Africa for so long is the Fédération Internationale de Football Association senior World Cup trophy and such has continued to make other continents to undermine the potentials of the second largest continent to do the unthinkable and produce the goods.

The FIFA World Cup has been a soccer festival for decades with it taking place in Africa just once out of many editions with limited slots available for about 53 country to fight for every four years.

When one considers the huge costs of organising sporting events of this magnitude, These costs are set to increase further after FIFA’s announcement that they would be raising the number of participating teams by 50% from 32 countries to 48 starting from the 2026 edition to be hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico.

Moreover, Egypt faced similar challenge during that African tournament, as the number of participating teams was increased from 16 to 24 for the first time in the history of the event.

In the same year, Egypt hosted the U23 Africa Cup of Nations between 8 and 22 November. The tournament was initially scheduled to take place in Zambia.

Egypt has succeeded in developing its sports infrastructure over the past five years, and has developed its tourism facilities across the country to accommodate large groups of visitors. On this basis, Egypt is quite qualified to host the global event and they are planning to build an 80,000 capacity stadium which is the thing in vogue.

Egypt has already proven its ability to host major sports events through its organisation of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, both in terms of stadiums and logistics. It also hosted the tournament draw ceremony in front of the Giza Pyramids.

Similarly, Egypt are also planning on hosting the 2032 Olympics Games just like Brazil did when they hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and hosted the Olympic Games in Rio two years later while Morocco after their bidding failures in 1994, 1998, 2006, 2010 and 2026 are considering possibility for a joint bid with Tunisia and Algeria.

Egypt already owns one of the world’s top 10 biggest football stadiums. The Borg El Arab Stadium, with its 86,000 seating capacity is the second largest football stadium in Africa.

The stadium was opened in 2007 and had been commissioned in an unsuccessful bid to host the 2010 World Cup by the Egyptian FA, and is now used as the home ground for the Egyptian national football team and as a venue for Egyptian cup finals.

A unique feature of the stadium is that it was built and designed by the Egyptian Armed Forces Corps of Engineers.

Africa was chosen as the host for the 2010 World Cup as part of a short-lived rotation policy, abandoned in 2007, to rotate the event among football confederations. Five African nations placed bids to host the 2010 World Cup: Egypt, Morocco, South Africa and a joint bid from Libya and Tunisia.
